Great Northern Railway

The Great Northern Railway was a transcontinental railroad completed in 1893 under the leadership of James J. Hill, running from St. Paul, Minnesota to Seattle, Washington. Unlike many competitors, it was built without federal land grants, relying instead on careful route planning and economic discipline. The line became known for efficient operations, high-quality passenger service such as the Empire Builder, and strong profitability. It focused heavily on agricultural and resource traffic from the northern Plains and Pacific Northwest, and its well-engineered routes through the Rockies helped it remain competitive until it merged into Burlington Northern Railroad in 1970.
